Planning the Elgin Theatre Show
Category: Event
After months of thought, I'm happy to announce that we have started the planning process to host a show at Elgin Theatre in several months.
The show will consist of Mentalism, Magic, Illusions and other mystic arts performed by 5 entertainers. We are planning to make it a 90 minute marathon of mind blowing illusions.
Half the proceeds of the show will be allocated to booking magicians to entertain sick children through the Sick Kids Foundation.
Can't give out too much information right now. But please stay tuned, and I will keep you all updated as to what's going on.
If you have any suggestions, or are interested in becoming a sponsor of this show, please contact us at info@infinitech-studios.com.
Performing for Children
Category: Rants
"How come you don't do childrens parties?"
"Do you do any tricks for children?"
"Why do you only stick to mentalism? There's money to be made in childrens parties."
I've heard these in one form or the other from pretty much everyone I know. Yes... why don't I perform for children?
Well.. the answer is quite simple actually. What would have a bigger impact on a child? Reading someone's mind and revealing to them the card that they are thinking of? or taking a card and turning it into a dove?
If there's one lesson I've learnt, in all the years I've been performing, it's that when it comes to children, nothing beats visual. Any juggler, no matter how bad, can hold a child's attention 10 times better than any mentalist would every be able to.
The next quetsion then is, why I don't have a different act for kids. I mean, I wasn't always a mentalist. I started off as a magician (as most mentalists do). So how come I don't do a show that involves some cards, a top hat, a cane, and balloon animals?
Let me also answer that with another question. Who would you go to for a haircut? A professional barber? Or a car mechanic who does haircutting on the side?
What I do on stage is not put together from stuff I've bought from a magic store, or learnt from a magic book. It is a cumulative result of continuous exploration, experimentation and improvement. In short, it's a way of living.
Above everything else, the biggest reason I stick to my performance style, is simply because of one thing. I enjoy it.
And that, I think, is what life is really all about...

I'm really looking forward to this show. It's the pilot show of the series, and I'm really excited about the material I'll be performing.
At the risk of being labelled a Derren Brown clone, I'm going to have the whole show revolve around influence. I'm also planning to conclude the show with 4 mini climaxes building up to a final climax that sums up the whole show.
If you get a chance, I'd love to see you at the show!

Overall, it was a VERY interesting and different experience, and a good break from stage shows.
As a person who is used to doing things on his own terms (people coming to see him at his given location during his specified time period etc.), this felt completely alien. Going after people and asking their permission to perform is a whole different ball game.
As good as it was, I don't think this experience alone was able to convert me into exclusively doing walkaround/street type of performances. I still prefer doing things on my own terms.

Not exactly how I expected it'll be. The rain didn't help much either. But it was a very interesting experience. I managed to give out some flyers promoting our upcoming event ("A Night of Mind Reading"). Will be performing there again tomorrow.
